Self Adhesive Labels typically come in two types - Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal.
THERMAL TRANSFER LABELS
A Thermal Transfer Ribbon is required when printing onto thermal transfer plain labels. The printhead on a label printer makes the ink from the ribbon bind to the plain labels. Thermal transfer labels are most suited to applications where labels are required to withstand scratches, abrasion, chemicals, moisture and sunlight.
DIRECT THERMAL LABELS
No ribbon is required when using Direct Thermal Labels as this type of label features a heat sensitive coating. When a printhead on a label printer makes contact with labels, the image is 'burned' onto them - in a similar fashion to a fax machine. Direct thermal plain labels are sensitive to sunlight, heat and pressure and are should be used for general purpose applications.
